Charities on the frontline of feeding South Africa’s most vulnerable

Charities on the frontline of feeding South Africa’s most vulnerable

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” – Margaret Mead. Charities are making a difference in SA!

South Africa (21 April 2020) – Earlier this month, we shared a post rounding up a few charities and organisations that were helping to feed the nation.

We receive emails and messages every day, highlighting the heroes that are raising funds, cooking food and venturing into the communities to distribute. We are once again, going to share with you, the people who are going above and beyond during this lockdown.

It is no secret that the lockdown has meant millions of people go hungry. It is a fact that has inspired hundreds of South Africans to take action. We have received more emails and messages than we can count from people making food parcels for the vulnerable.

To make sure each story is told, we have compiled all the food heroes in one place. These are the people and projects that are helping to feed the nation during the lockdown. They are trying to feed everyone so if you can assist in any way; you can click through to their Facebook pages to connect.

You can now feed multiple families for less than R100.00 by making up easy meal packs and writing a note explaining how to prepare the meal.

Johannesburg, South Africa (19 May 2020) – Kindness Like Confetti has started collecting meal bags as a way to fill the gap between food parcel handouts. The meal bag is made up of six simple non-perishable pantry ingredients that make up a meal when water is added.

They recommend buying rice, pasta, soup mix or split peas, lentils, stock cubes and soup packets. This won’t set you back more than R100.00 and you can make up multiple packs. The pack will feed a family of four for a day.

LINDEN – The team donated mugs of soup and knitted beanies and scarves to the members of the Fairland Police Station.

To mark South African Police Service Day on 23 June, local NPO Kindness Like Confetti decided to do something special for the men and women in blue who have been working tirelessly to keep our streets safe during the lockdown period.

Started by the Jozi Jersey Project, which is the knitting arm of Kindness Like Confetti, the team came up with the idea to knit beanies and scarves for police officers. “We were given the green light but we also found out that the officers would not be allowed to wear them on duty as they are not standard issue uniform,” said Kim Wiehe of the Jozi Jersey Project. The team decided to donate to the members of the victim support unit. Kindness Like Confetti organised mugs with soup to be given to all members of the station’s staff.

The food was top notch says resident Aubrey Crowder. “We all had a lovely time hosted by such wonderful people who took time out of their busy lives to include us in such a lovely way.”

“Our knitting and crochet team called The Joseph Jersey Project made up soap bags for residents. The soap saver bag doubles up as a light exfoliator and allows you to easily grip and control the slippery soap in the shower.”
